The Spaniard Hierro has been appointed as the sporting director for Al-Nassr Saudi Football Club
Al-Nassr, the runner-up in the Saudi Pro League, appointed former Spanish star Fernando Hierro as their sporting director on Tuesday after he left his position at Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara.
Al-Nassr finished second behind Al-Hilal in the league and lost the King's Cup to Al-Hilal in a penalty shootout.
Hierro played for Real Madrid from 1989 to 2003. After a distinguished career with the Madrid club, the 56-year-old Hierro had intermittent coaching stints.
The Spanish Football Federation parted ways with Hierro days after Spain's disappointing exit from the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Hierro was appointed on the eve of the tournament following the sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui, who had agreed to manage Real Madrid after the World Cup.
Before the World Cup, Hierro held the position of sporting director, and he was hastily assigned the role of head coach for the tournament. Prior to this, the former defender had a coaching stint with Real Oviedo in the 2016-2017 season and served as an assistant to Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti during the 2014-2015 season.
Hierro also worked as an ambassador for Real Madrid before being appointed as the sporting director of Chivas Guadalajara in October, a position he left in May.
He spent the majority of his career at the Madrid club, winning every possible title, including five La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League titles.
Hierro played 89 international matches for Spain, scoring 29 goals. He participated in four World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002) and two European Championships (1996 and 2000).
