Rummenigge urges Kompany to fight for titles
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a member of the supervisory board of Bayern Munich, has warned the club's new coach, Vincent Kompany, that he must fight for titles from the very beginning.
German press quoted the former CEO of Bayern after a meeting of directors in Bielefeld: "I wish Kompany all the success because if you don't win a title with Bayern Munich for a year, it will be difficult and excessive; we already suffered from not winning any trophies this year."
Rummenigge was somewhat reserved when talking about the 38-year-old Belgian coach, whom he has not yet met.
Rummenigge stated that Bayern's board member for sports, Max Eberl, was convinced "by this relatively young man, who does not have much experience."
Rummenigge added: "I believe he has the right philosophy. I asked Josep Guardiola, under whom Kompany played for a long time, and he said he is convinced that Kompany is an interesting coach."
He continued: "We should not forget that Bayern Munich plays attacking football and always aims to control the games. Kompany represents this philosophy."
Bayern decided to part ways with their former coach, Thomas Tuchel, in February, and spent a long time searching for his replacement, especially after preferred candidates Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick decided to stay in their current positions with Bayer Leverkusen, and the German and Austrian national teams, respectively.
The club's officials considered reversing their decision to let go of Tuchel and keeping him on, but the two sides could not reach an agreement.
Kompany recently coached English side Burnley but was relegated with the team to the Championship last season.
